Welcome to the P3PToolbox
P3P Toolbox is a one-stop resource developed by the Internet Education Foundation in cooperation with the World Wide Web Consortium and a coalition of Internet industry leaders
and public interest organizations to provide privacy officers and Webmasters with the information they need to make their Web sites P3P compliant.
Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P), created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), is emerging as an industry standard providing a simple, automated
way for users to gain more control over the use of personal information on Web sites they visit. At its most basic level, P3P is a standardized set of multiple-choice questions, covering all the major aspects of a Web site's privacy policies. Taken together, they present a clear snapshot of how a site handles personal information about its users. P3P-enabled Web sites make this information available in a standard, machine-readable format. P3P enabled browsers can "read" this snapshot
automatically and compare it to the consumer's own set of privacy preferences. P3P enhances user control by putting privacy policies where users can find them, in a form users can understand, and, most importantly, enables users to act on what they see.
Why implement P3P?
The privacy of an individual's personal data is one of the top concerns of Web users, government, and the media. Opinion surveys consistently show that these concerns about privacy are a leading impediment to the further growth of Web-based commerce. While initial efforts by Web sites to publicly disclose their privacy policies have had some impact, these policies are often difficult for users to locate and understand, too lengthy to read, and change frequently without notice. How Does P3P Work?
P3P enables Web sites to translate their privacy practices into a standardized, machine-readable format (Extensible Markup Language - XML) that can be retrieved automatically and easily interpreted by a user's browser. Translation can be performed manually or with automated tools. Once completed, simple server configurations enable the Web site to automatically inform visitors that it supports P3P. More >>
How to Implement P3P
This section features the Internet Education Foundation and World Wide Web Consortium's Implementation Guide. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to implement and includes everything from who should be involved in P3P implementation to what you need to know about your Web site before you implement to how to create and implement P3P policies for your Web sites. An Industry Commitment
The privacy of an individual's personal data on the Internet is a top concern for the Internet industry. That is why the industry has come together to lead the implementation of P3P to ensure that Web users' personal data is protected and only shared with the Internet sites that they choose to share it with. This site was created with the generous assistance of the Microsoft Corporation, the Privacy Leadership Initiative, Doubleclick, Gardent, and Hewlett Packard.
A Global Standard
P3P is a specification created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), a group consisting of more 500 organization members that have come together to design and promote common protocols to ensure interoperability of the Internet. The W3C designed P3P to serve as the global standard for online privacy. As such, the platform specifications can be designed and implemented for any Web browser, either as an integrated function within the browser or as a separate plug-in that users can download on their own.
